Ambergris Cay: Turks & Caicos Luxury Stay Guide

Updated: 23 hours ago

The Ultimate Destination for Luxury, Privacy, and Nature

As long as I can remember, I’ve wondered what it’s like to own a private island, a secluded retreat like those of Sir Richard Branson and other fortunate few. That is, until I stumbled upon Ambergris Cay—a hidden gem tucked away in the southern reaches of Turks & Caicos. Located in the southeastern corner of this island chain, I couldn’t resist booking a stay at this elusive, luxurious resort. Picture this: the island is your personal resort, and the resort is your private island, almost entirely for yourself.

GETTING THERE

For private jet owners, Ambergris Cay ensures a hassle-free journey, whether you’re traveling from Miami, New York, or elsewhere in a Gulfstream jet or similar aircraft. Home of the largest private jet runway in the Caribbean—a 5,700-foot-long strip—Ambergris Cay allows for direct flights to the island, something quite rare to find in other private islands. The dedicated staff handles all customs and immigration requirements, eliminating the need to stop at Providenciales Airport, the primary arrival hub of Turks & Caicos. This means the moment you arrive at paradise island you can be in your villa within minutes.

To reach the island, I enjoyed a 20-minute scenic flight on an Ambergris Cay branded twin-engine propeller plane, complementary for anyone staying at the resort. Also worth mentioning is the easy access to Ambergris Cay. Travelers coming from the U.S., there are numerous non-stop flights to Providenciales Airport from major cities such as Miami, New York, Boston, and Atlanta. Direct flights are also available from Canada and the UK, offering convenient options for international visitors. Notably, starting February 2025, American Airlines will launch its first-ever non-stop flight from Miami to South Caicos, operating twice a week. This new route will reduce the journey to Ambergris Cay to a quick 15-minute plane ride.

SETTING

Originally a community for private homeowners, Ambergris Cay opened as a resort in 2019 for those seeking ultra privacy, luxury and exclusivity.

Upon landing on the island, I was greeted by the friendly staff and quickly checked in before being escorted to my beachfront villa, named Aurora. Interestingly, each residence on the island has its own unique name.

As we made our way along winding dirt roads, in an electric-powered golf cart, I couldn’t help but appreciate the island’s vast, pristine landscape—largely untouched, something quite rare these days. Spanning 1,100 acres, the island is home to native plants, endangered iguanas, a variety of bird species, and the iconic red-headed cactus. It perfectly set the stage for a nature-based experience that seamlessly blends luxury.

ALL INCLUSIVE

The all-inclusive experience at Ambergris Cay takes convenience and relaxation to a whole new level. It eliminates the hassle, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the island’s offerings without a second thought. From breakfast, lunch, and dinner to drinks and activities, everything is included and tailored to your needs and preferences. The all-inclusive feature from the island allowed me to appreciate the natural wonders around me even more.

HIGH TECH

In addition to having the Caribbean’s longest private jet runway, Ambergris Cay has made significant investments in technology and sustainability. One of the key initiatives is an on-site bottling plant that desalinates ocean water, providing reusable glass bottles for all guests and dining outlets, including the spa and fitness pavilion. The island also features a solar farm that offsets its energy consumption, with plans to increase its output as the resort develops.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Expect to get lost while exploring the island, as I did—it’s all part of the fun! The island’s low density is reflected in its collection of villas, private homes, and bungalows, all offering breathtaking vistas. There are just 17 bungalows, 9 villas, and private homes, ranging from three to six bedrooms, each with oceanfront views and a contemporary classic tropical décor.

Each luxurious accommodation comes with a dedicated butler available to assist with any need, plus a fully equipped kitchen, a stocked refrigerator, tea and coffee, a pool with sun loungers, a telescope, binoculars, board games, and your own transportation vehicle—a golf cart.

The villas vary in design and size, catering to different needs. “Aurora,” where I stayed, is an excellent choice for a small group with its open-plan living space, heated pool, and ocean views. The villa has a cozy-chic laid back hommy style with a fully equipped kitchen and stocked mini-bars.

Each villa features a distinct layout, making the accommodations even more personalized. The “Carpe Diem” villa offers seclusion, a rooftop deck, and 360-degree views, while the “Dream Pavilion” villa, the largest of the options, provides ultimate luxury with six bedrooms, two pools, and a private beach.

There are also the “Lands End” and “Morning Star” villas which focus on privacy and scenic views, both featuring heated pools and proximity to the beach. “Waypoint” offers exclusive access to a beautiful beach, and “Poseidon” and “Neptune” are ideal for families traveling together.

Ambergris Cay also offers two styles of beachfront bungalows, each with ocean views, a heated pool, and outdoor showers. The Two-Bedroom Beachfront Bungalow accommodates up to four guests, while the Beachfront Bungalow is perfect for couples. These bungalows provide a private, intimate experience, complementing the luxury and seclusion of the island’s villas.

DINING

Ambergris Cay features two dining options: Calico and The Clubhouse. The Clubhouse, located on a scenic cove, offers globally-inspired à la carte dishes with Caribbean flavors, seasonal produce, and signature selections. Guests can also unwind at two bars—Mahoney’s Bar & Lounge and Hangover Bar.

Calico serves meals with a focus on local ingredients, and for those seeking a personalized dining experience, off-menu requests are available. Exclusive dining experiences, such as private beach barbecues, seaside dining, and private chef services, are offered for an additional charge.

The Clubhouse is also a hub for social fun, featuring a variety of games, including a gaming station, billiards, a classic arcade, and a ping pong table. 24-hour room service is also available.

AMENITIES

There is no shortage of activities to enjoy at Ambergris Cay. The all-inclusive resort offers a variety of experiences, including yoga, guided nature walks, tennis, non-motorized water sports, and onshore fishing. Other outdoor activities include paddleboarding, bird watching, private boat excursions, deserted beach experiences, whale-watching tours, and more. Spa treatments, motorized water sports (including fishing and other boat excursions), reserve wine lists, room service, and private chef and dining services are available for booking, each with an additional fee. For kids, Ambergris Cay is the perfect setting. Let them run freely and there is a wide range of interactive games and water sports activities, including exciting treasure hunts.

FITNESS & WELLNESS

To my surprise, there is a state-of-the-art fitness pavilion at Ambergris Cay—an unexpected luxury on a remote island—that offers an extraordinary workout experience. The pavilion, a standalone building, is perched atop a hillside, offering breathtaking views of the Caribbean Ocean and the unspoiled landscape of Ambergris Cay. In addition to the stunning vistas, the pavilion features floor-to-ceiling glass windows and is fully equipped with the latest Peloton bikes, Precor workout machines, cardio equipment, free weights, and everything you would expect from a top-tier fitness center. Above the fitness floor, you’ll find the magnificent Yoga Deck—by far the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. From here, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the entire island, immersing yourself in the stunning surroundings. Daily yoga classes are offered in this serene setting.

For complete relaxation and rejuvenation, head to the oceanfront Elevate Spa, which offers a wide range of body treatments, massages, and facial treatments. You can also enjoy a personalized treatment in the privacy of your villa or bungalow for an additional fee. To my delight, every guest at the resort is treated to a complimentary 30-minute daily spa treatment.

MAKE IT YOUR HOME

If you choose to make Ambergris Cay your home, there are several options available, including ready-to-move-in villas (fully furnished), available lots for sale, and custom-built homes starting at $4 million. As a property owner, you will enjoy full access to all resort amenities. It’s also worth noting that the resort can manage your property if you choose to rent it, and there are no property or income taxes in Turks & Caicos.
