LIVE@Frost Science: The Past, Present and Future of Thinking Machines

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly woven into the ways we communicate, work, and relate to the world, but what is AI? How do machines “learn” to think more like us, and are they really “thinking”? Will AI change the world for the better, or should we be worried? As the museum prepares to open AI: More Than Human, join Dr. Mark Finlayson, professor and researcher at Florida International University, on Thursday, May 1, for LIVE@Frost Science: The Past, Present and Future of Thinking Machines as he uncovers the potential and limitations of artificial intelligence.

Drawing from his work at FIU’s Cognition, Narrative, and Culture Laboratory, this talk explores AI’s origins, present and future, how machines learn from language, and what it means to teach machines to understand us. Along the way, Dr. Finlayson will dispel common myths and misconceptions about AI, share surprising truths about AI’s past and present, decode its capabilities and limitations, and explore possibilities for a future where humans and machines think together.  

Admission is complimentary. Tickets are limited to four per transaction. Program will take place inside the Frost Planetarium.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Program starts promptly at 7:00 p.m. Seating is first-come, first-served. Food and beverage will be available for purchase prior to the event.

Please note registration to the event does not include museum admission. Museum exhibitions close at 6:00 p.m.
