New Wave Art Wknd (NWAW) is Back for Its Sixth Edition
New Wave Art Wknd (NWAW) is back for its sixth edition, supporting its year round non-profit artist residency and public programs. The initiative is designed to engage and inspire the Palm Beach Communities and elevate emerging artists from under-represented communities. Each year, a different theme is explored through the weekend, with this year’s focus being “Unity & Community.”
Taking place at the end of Miami Art Week, from December 6 through 8, 2024, NWAW showcases the region’s flourishing contemporary art scene and invites attendees to take part in thought-provoking programming that includes curated panel discussions, private collection visits, gallery hops, open studios, dining experiences, and more.
For 2024, the artist-in-residence timed to NWAW is mixed media artist Tiffany Alfonseca who explores Black and Afro-Latinx diasporic culture. Alfonseca dives deep into her Dominican heritage by depicting portraits of people in her life such as her friends and family. In doing so she opens up the conversation of how diverse the Dominican culture and its people truly are.
Since its inception, New Wave Art Residency has welcomed sixteen incredible artists from around the world. Resident artists are provided with an apartment and studio space for six weeks at The Square in West Palm Beach, facilitated by one of New Wave Art Residency’s valued partners, Related Companies. A stipend is also offered, as well as significant exposure, introductions, and sales support, placing the artists’ work in some of the nation’s most prominent collections.
NWAW was founded by gallerist Sarah Gavlak with collaborators and an advisory board that includes Beth Rudin DeWoody, Franklin Sirmans, Isolde Brielmaier, Yvonne Force Villareal, Jane Holzer, Lisa Perry, and other leaders in the field.
Last year’s sponsors included Acquavella, Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, Ben Brown Fine Arts, Dylan Brant Fine Art, GAVLAK, Kristin Hjellegjerde, Lehmann Maupin, Norton Museum of Art, The Bunker Artspace, The Square, TW Fine Art, UOVO and White Cube, among others.
“New Wave Art Wknd 2024 is more than just an art weekend — it is a platform for collaboration, creativity, dialogue and an exciting way to raise crucial funds for our beloved New Wave Artist Residency. Our goal is to celebrate the diversity of contemporary art while fostering meaningful connections between artists, curators, collectors and art aficionados alike. Art has the power to create positive change and encourage collective growth, and that’s why it is so important to nurture artists in the Palm Beach Community and beyond.” says Founder of New Wave Artist Residency and New Wave Art Wknd, Sarah Gavlak.
