Protecting Oceans: Belmond and Parley's Groundbreaking Partnership

Belmond and Parley for the Oceans have announced a new partnership with the ambition to protect the oceans and inspire a new generation of Ocean Guardians. This partnership includes an unprecedented commitment to environmental education. Belmond and Parley for the Oceans are working together to address urgent challenges, incorporating innovating initiatives that can mitigate the impacts of severe threats to the planet's oceans.

Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, Riviera Maya, has been selected to pilot this initiative. Nestled between the jungle and the Caribbean Sea, Riviera Maya is home to the world's second-largest coral reef and several endangered species of sea turtles. Already engaged in sustainability initiatives for many years, Maroma will be a model for implementing the Parley AIR Strategy - Avoid, Intercept, Redesign - which consists of locally tailored initiatives to maximize positive impact on local ecosystems.

Launch initiatives include educational programs for hotel team members, Parley AIR Talks to raise awareness among visitors of the critical state of the oceans, and a groundbreaking Maroma 'Ocean Guardians' program, celebrating employees' role in protecting the environment alongside local experts while educating guests about the  rich biodiversity found along the Riviera Maya coastline.

Dan Ruff, Belmond CEO, emphasizes that this partnership is not about 'eco-tourism', but rather acting as a real facilitator for change. "We firmly believe that each hotel is part of an interconnected community and ecosystem. Our 'Think Global, Act Local' approach values the diversity of first-hand knowledge and recognizes the specificities of every context. In collaboration with Parley we are excited about amplifying the role of Maroma as custodians of the coastline, writing a new chapter in the hotel's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship."
