Miami’s wellness scene has a new crown jewel. Hürrem Hammam Wellness and Spa, located in North Miami, made its grand debut last year, capturing the hearts and minds of wellness enthusiasts and redefining relaxation and luxury in the city ever since.

The visionary behind the project? Gökhan Yavuzer, a self-proclaimed problem solver and wellness and design expert. From an early age, he was captivated by architecture, fascinated by the process of designing and building spaces that not only served a purpose but told a story. Today, as the founder of Hürrem Hammam Wellness and Spa in North Miami, Yavuzer has taken his lifelong passion and channeled it into an ambitious project that introduces the Turkish hammam tradition to a new audience.
We sat down with Yavuzer to discuss his journey, the challenges of bridging cultures through wellness, and how he has built a sanctuary where tradition and innovation coexist seamlessly.

Q: What inspired you to create Hürrem Hammam Wellness and Spa?
Gökhan Yavuzer: I’ve always been passionate about architecture and design and grew up in Turkey, where the hammam is an integral part of our culture. The idea of creating a space that honors this rich tradition while incorporating modern wellness elements fascinated me. I spent years working on spa and wellness projects around the world, but I always dreamed of bringing an authentic Turkish hammam experience to the states In April 2024, I was able to make this dream a reality, unveiling the first and only authentic Turkish hammam in the U.S.
Q: What were some of the biggest challenges in introducing the Turkish hammam tradition to the U.S. market?
GY: Education was one of the main challenges. Many people in the U.S. are familiar with spas, but the hammam experience is quite different. It’s not just about relaxation; it’s a cleansing ritual that dates back centuries. We had to find a way to introduce the concept in a way that felt inviting and accessible while maintaining authenticity.
Another challenge was the architectural aspect. Traditional hammams are built using specific materials and layouts to create the ideal humidity and temperature balance. We couldn’t simply replicate what exists in Turkey; we had to adapt while staying true to the essence of the hammam.

Q: Can you tell us more about the design and inspiration behind Hürrem Hammam?
GY: The entire space is inspired by Ottoman history, particularly the legendary love story of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and Hürrem Sultan. That’s why we chose the name Hürrem Hammam—it represents passion, elegance, and timeless beauty.
From an architectural perspective, we worked meticulously to incorporate elements of traditional hammams while ensuring a luxurious and contemporary feel. The space spans 20,000 square feet and includes multiple hammams, private treatment rooms, a salt room, a hydromassage pool, saunas, and even an authentic Turkish restaurant, Topkaki. Every detail, from the marble to the mosaics, was carefully selected to create an immersive experience.

Q: How have guests responded to the experience?
GY: The response has been overwhelmingly positive. The Turkish-American community loves that they have an authentic hammam in Miami, and first-time visitors are always amazed by the uniqueness of the experience. Some guests have told us it was their first time truly understanding what deep relaxation feels like. Others appreciate the cultural aspect and the storytelling behind the space.
Q: What does the future hold for Hürrem Hammam and your vision for wellness?
GY: My goal is to continue expanding the understanding of holistic wellness through culturally significant practices. I believe there is so much untapped potential in merging traditional rituals with modern wellness concepts. We are already looking at opportunities to bring the Hürrem Hammam experience to other cities.
Beyond that, I hope to continue exploring how we can design wellness spaces that not only provide physical rejuvenation but also connect people to history and culture in a meaningful way.

In Closing
With Hürrem Hammam, Gökhan Yavuzer has crafted more than just a wellness destination; he has built a bridge between the past and the present, offering an experience that is as much about history as it is about self-care. In doing so, he is redefining what it means to relax, recharge, and reconnect.
