Lake Como, Italy – Luxury Travel Guide

Lake Como shimmers with its turquoise waters, exuding a romantic atmosphere surrounded by 19th-century villas and fairytale-like vistas. It is under an hour’s train ride from Milan. This enchanting destination has served as an important retreat for historical figures including a roster of A-list celebrities.

A haven of tranquility and inspiration, Como drew notable figures throughout its history. From the time of the Roman Empire, when poets like Virgil lived, to the Renaissance, where Leonardo da Vinci found inspiration, to the 18th and 19th centuries, when writers like Goethe, Stendhal, and Manzoni created their masterpieces along its shores. Even Alessandro Volta, born in Como, left his mark with the invention of the battery, immortalizing the lake’s significance. It also serves as a haven for celebrities, including Richard Branson, Madonna, soccer legend Ronaldinho, George Clooney, and Donatella Versace.

GETTING AROUND

We explored Lake Como by car, which provides the greatest flexibility to experience its majestic charm. However, it’s best to avoid driving around Lake Como during the high season, from the end of May to the end of September, due to heavy traffic. Instead, consider visiting in April, October, or November when the roads are less congested.

Be aware that public transportation is somewhat irregular, taxi fares are expensive, and Uber is not available in Lake Como. If your hotel is near a town with a pier, the ferry is a good alternative for getting around. For something memorable, rent a “riva” boat, which is a charming wood-paneled boat. It will give you an intimate and unforgettable experience of Como.

EXPERIENCES

Bellagio, famously known as the “Pearl of Lake Como,” is a popular destination. Its central location on the lake provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area. Renowned for its charming waterfront cafes, boutique shopping, inviting winery sidewalks, and exquisite gardens, Bellagio is a magnet for tourists. To fully appreciate its beauty and avoid the bustling crowds, it’s best to arrive early.

Villa Carlotta, nestled in Tremezzo on Lake Como, is a historic gem. Built in the 17th century by Marquis Giorgio II Clerici, it became a center of artistic excellence, boasting masterpieces by artists such as Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen. Once owned by Princess Marianne of the Netherlands, who passed it to her daughter Carlotta in 1843, thus lending the estate its enduring name.

Other majestic destinations include Villa Monastero and its botanical garden, Passeggiata Degli, Menaggio, also known as the “Golden Triangle” of Como, and the popular Villa Balbianello, where a number of films have been featured, including A Month by the Lake (1995), Casino Royale (2006), and Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002). Not to be missed is the dreamy town of Varenna, Teatro Sociale and Isola Comacina.
